Don’t Beam Me Up

Have you ever wondered why people complain about the things they do not have control over? Take for example the weather, yesterday when I started out on my ride it was damp and foggy. It did not take long for me to figure out I was going to be damp and a little chilled by the time I returned home, but it did not stop me from enjoying myself.
There is something to be said about being in the elements and making the best of it. As I pedaled along through the fog I could see the sun attempting to break through the mist and at times there were beams of light which burned through like a transporter beam from the Starship Enterprise attempting to transport me somewhere else.
But I didn’t need to be beamed up. Just riding my bike was taking somewhere the people in the cars passing by would never to able to get to and most likely would not understand. It was a beautiful fall morning ride.

Exactly. Just the other day, on a chilly morning, I was locking my bicycle on the square when three people–business types–walked by. They passed within 10 feet of me. And one of them said aloud while looking at me and pointing at me: “I just could never do that.” The speaker was apparently cold. She wore a thin blouse and walked a bit hunched over with her arms crossed.
I was chilled from my ride but not uncomfortably so. I was wearing proper gear for the conditions. But her remark made me wonder just how far we have removed ourselves from that natural world that most people would prefer a car and all its dangers and hassles to the natural conditions of the weather.
What’s wrong with being cold? Or wet? Or hot? I’ll tell you: Everything when you’ve spent you’re life trying to avoid them.
Good post
I hear the same thing from people and I tell them they do not know what they are missing.
