Change in the Air
This morning I officially accepted summer is over when I put the panniers on my bike and took the trunk off. For me this marks cycling in cooler more unpredictable weather when I need to be prepared for sudden changes in temperature or the onset of rain. In the panniers I will have rain gear, Under Armor skull cap, an extra layer of base clothing, and warmer gloves for riding home at night.
It feels like I have less freedom in the winter when I ride. I don’t know if it is because I need to wear more clothing or if it is because I need to carry more with me to be prepared for those times when the weather man really gets it wrong. Whatever it is, it makes me feel less free.
On the other hand I get the utmost enjoyment this time of year. When I ride I can feel the cold on my face, smell the change in the air, see the leaves changing, and hear the migratory geese squawking as they head south for the winter. Most people can feel the change from summer to fall and then to winter, but as a cyclist I experience the change with all of my senses.
I may feel less free, but I am still much freer than those who do not bicycle.

Yep, the season is changing, even here in New Orleans where the rains are falling and the air is cool. I like it, but I’ll kind of miss cycling in 100 degree weather with high humidity. It’s amazing how one comes to love cycling in what one has.
Thanks for the well wishes in re my fall. I scraped off the scar from the last fall, so at least I’m consistent!
I too am consistent.
I have had to wear my leggings and arm warmers for my morning commute since last week. And it is certainly two light riding for the entire morning commute now.
I’m from the midwest so this time of year is awesome for riding the bike. I love getting a little chill on the long descents then warming up on the climbs. The brisk air makes me feel faster.
