Building an Xtracycle

Xtracycle Freeloader

Sometime time ago I found a steal of a deal on a Trek mountain bike at a garage sale. The guy selling it said he was more of a road rider than a trail rider and decided he was going to sell it cheap to possibly buy another road bike. We both agreed you can never have too many bicycles so I was the new owner of the bike.

Since then I have found I too am more of a road rider. But instead of selling the bike I have decided to build an Xtracycle and use the Trek as the base bike.

I was thinking about purchasing a Surly Big Dummy frame and finish building the bike, but I am not certain how much I will use the Xtracycle. From everything I have read and the few people I have met, they say if I build it, I will ride it, and love it. So I have decided if I really like the bike after I build it, I will possibly sell my converted Trek and build a new and improved model.

This weekend I was at REI in downtown Portland and came across two Xtracycles, but could not locate either rider. Bummer!! I did get a good look at the bikes and I must admit there is a lot to like, use, and have all round fun with. But I would still like to ride one.

In the meantime I am starting my process of researching what I am going to build and how I want to put my own personal touches on the bike. An Xtracycle is going to be my winter bicycle project. If you are want some positive comments about or tons of encourage to build an Xtracycle, all you need to do is stop by Bike Commuters and ask.

I have thought about an xtracycle. I still might some day. Can a person have too many bikes?

Do you ever read http://anadventurecalledbicycling.blogspot.com/? She has an xtracycle and some interesting pics of using it. She doesn’t have a car and actually moved with her xtracycle.

Make sure you order early. I heard the demand was high and production had a hard time keeping up.

Tom: I heard the same thing. I guess these bikes are getting very popular.
