Short Weekend

Published by Bob at 11:01 am under bicycling

What started out to be a bicycling oriented long weekend failed to materialize. This is because I was called at home to come in to work and cover for a co-worker who has a “mission critical” job. I ended up covering Saturday and Sunday, thus I feel like I am sleep deprived on Monday and in need of some quality bike time.

However, the weekend was not a total loss. I managed to attend the Portland Twilight Criterium Friday evening in the north park blocks of Portland. It was good to see the turn out included families with little kids watching in amazement as the cyclist flew by with inches of the barricades and giggle with the trailing gust of wind from the peloton. As I stood there watching the racers speed by I overheard one little girl as she sat on her dads shoulders say she wanted to be a racer. Ahh… there is hope. Others viewing the race where curious locals while many people from the vast bicycle community in the area came out to see what was going on and join in some of the festivities.

I did not get to ride in the Portland Bridge Pedal this weekend, but I am not disappointed. In recent years the popularity has grown to where they estimate 15,000 bicyclist turn out to enjoy and ride across Portland’s many bridges, which are closed to traffic and ends up causing bicycle grid lock. Maybe next year.
