Prime Time Bicycling
Portland and it’s bicycle friendly infrastructure has made it on the prime time national news once again. Monday night on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams Portland was the focus of how cities are becoming more bike friendly. Brian Williams introduced the piece with:
“So much of life these days comes back to the price of gas, the high cost of simply getting around, which is why, any number of American cities and towns… are following the example of Portland, Oregon.”
Reporter Tom Costello mentioned several other cities which were investing in bicycling, called it the “Portland effect” and said after 20 years, cycling is in our DNA.
Tom also mentioned a bicycle share program in Washington D.C. where for 40 dollars a year you can pick up a bicycle at anyone of a number l of locations use it and then return it to a drop off rack in the city. It would be great to see Portland participate in such a program. I would use it when I am in downtown Portland and do not have my bike with me.
